Thuringia, Germany

Thuringiafor families with babies

Thuringia is the surprise in the German Familotel map: forest, not Alps, and a baby club that takes infants from 7 days old at The Grand Green in Bad Tabarz. Frankfurt is 1h 35min from London, then 90 minutes by car into the Thuringian Forest, and you are at 700 metres in spruce woodland with thermal-style indoor pools and a Baby Club running 8.30am to 9pm daily. The Grand Green includes baby equipment in its all inclusive package (cot, monitor, bottle warmer, steriliser), which removes the hand-luggage panic. This region suits parents who want regulated German childcare without the Zugspitze price tag or the Bavarian summer crowds. Hiking trails from the hotel take a Thule buggy on the graded forest paths, and the Rennsteig long-distance trail crosses nearby for a flat section walk with a sleeping toddler. It is inland, quiet, and genuinely baby-first rather than baby-tolerant.

Stay here · The Grand Green Familotel

The 7-day minimum age in the Baby Club is the headline for newborn parents, with pedagogically trained staff, a dedicated nap room, and baby equipment included in all inclusive pricing. The pool runs a 33C baby zone, and Bad Tabarz is flat enough that you never need to carry the buggy up steps to reach the restaurant or pool.

Beach reality

No beach, no lake within walking distance. The swim venue is the hotel indoor-outdoor pool complex: main pool at 30C, baby pool at 33C, and a separate toddler slide zone for when yours is walking. In summer, the Schmalwasser reservoir and Inselsberg outdoor pool are 15 to 20 minutes by car with grassy entries and shallow roped zones. Winter is indoor pool every day plus sledging when snow arrives from late December. Treat water play as a hotel activity, not a coastline excursion.

When to go

June and September are the sweet spots: 18 to 24C daytime, forest green, pools fully heated, fewer German school holiday crowds. July and August hit 22 to 28C and fill up fast. December to February is snow-play season with indoor pools as the daily anchor. May works for forest flowers but the lakes are still cold. Skip November unless you want spa weather only.

Don't go if

Don't go if you wanted a beach. Don't go if you need English spoken everywhere; staff are excellent but this is deep Germany. Don't go in shoulder weeks when the forest activity programme thins. Don't go if a 90-minute post-flight drive is your breaking point.

A calm 5 day rhythm

Day one, arrive, pool, early dinner. Day two, Baby Club from 9 to 11, parents walk the Rennsteig flat section with the pram, lunch, nap, afternoon pool. Day three, Schmalwasser reservoir morning paddle, back for nap, hotel dinner. Day four, rest day on property with one kids club session. Day five, depart. Keep it slow; the forest rewards repetition over sightseeing.
