Seasonality Guide

Best Time to Visit with a Baby

Timing matters more with a baby than without one. Too hot and naps fall apart. Too crowded and the buggy queue at breakfast will break you. Here is what I actually look at month by month.

The golden rule

For almost every Mediterranean destination, May and June, and September are the sweet spot for families with babies. Warm enough for pools and outdoor life, cool enough for babies to be comfortable, quiet enough to enjoy, and all kids clubs and creches are open.

Spain

Best months

May, June, September

Avoid

July and August (extreme heat)

Tip: The Costa del Sol can hit 40C+ in July and August. For babies, shoulder season gives you warm pools, open kids clubs, and bearable temperatures.

Creche availability: Most resort kids clubs run Easter to October. Some Ikos and Club Med properties run year round.

Greece

Best months

May, June, September

Avoid

July and August (peak heat and crowds)

Tip: Halkidiki and Crete are the sweet spots for baby holidays. The Meltemi winds in July and August can make islands gusty but keep temperatures more bearable than the mainland.

Creche availability: Sani Resort and Ikos run from late April to October. Daios Cove and Grecotel open Easter to late October.

Portugal

Best months

May, June, September, October

Avoid

None (year round destination)

Tip: Portugal is one of the best year round options in Europe for babies. The Atlantic keeps summers cooler than the Med, and Martinhal properties operate 12 months.

Creche availability: Martinhal Sagres and Cascais run year round. Pine Cliffs runs April to October.

Italy

Best months

May, June, September

Avoid

August (Ferragosto, extremely busy)

View Hotels

Tip: Avoid August if you can: it is Italian national holiday (Ferragosto) and resorts are packed. Sardinia has Europe's best shallow water beaches for babies.

Creche availability: Forte Village runs May to October. Borgo Egnazia year round. Sicilian resorts April to October.

Cyprus

Best months

April, May, October, November

Avoid

July and August (40C+ heat)

View Hotels

Tip: Cyprus is warm when the UK is grey, but the flight is four to four and a half hours from London, not a three hour hop. Spring and autumn are heavenly for babies: 25C, quiet beaches, all facilities running.

Creche availability: Almyra and Elysium run creches April to October. Seasonal closure in winter.

France

Best months

June, September

Avoid

August (very busy, very hot in Provence)

Tip: Provence is gorgeous but gets scorching in July and August. The Riviera stays cooler with sea breezes. Club Med offers the best value all inclusive childcare.

Creche availability: Club Med Opio runs Baby Club Med seasonally (April-October). Terre Blanche kids club is seasonal.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to take a baby on holiday to Europe?

May and June and September are the sweet spot across most European destinations. Temperatures are warm (22 to 28C) but not dangerously hot, resort kids clubs and creches are open, crowds are manageable, and prices are lower than peak summer. Late September offers the warmest sea temperatures of the year.

Is it safe to take a baby to a hot country in summer?

Babies are more vulnerable to heat than adults. In July and August, many Mediterranean destinations reach 35C+, which can be dangerous for very young children. If travelling in peak summer, choose a resort with shaded pools, air conditioned rooms, and plan around midday breaks indoors (11am-3pm).

Are hotel kids clubs open year round?

Most European resort kids clubs operate seasonally, typically Easter/April through October. A few exceptions run year round: Martinhal properties in Portugal, Borgo Egnazia in Italy, and some Club Med resorts. Always confirm creche dates before booking if childcare is important to you.

Which European country is best for a first baby holiday?

Portugal, especially the Algarve, is what I'd pick first: around three hours from the UK and purpose built family resorts like Martinhal with year round operation. Cyprus has outstanding baby hotels, but the flight is four to four and a half hours, so I'd only fly Cyprus if the hotel already has you sold. Both have excellent healthcare and English is widely spoken.
